Artist Residency

The "African Fusion" residency program is an all-encompassing program that offers international artists a transformative and immersive experience in Melville, Johannesburg.

This unique program blends the best elements of three concepts: "Urban Rhythms: Exploring African Contemporary Art," "African Fusion: Urban-Art Safari Residency," and "Afriversity: Bridging Art and African Studies." The residency program aims to provide a holistic and enriching experience that encourages artistic exploration, cultural exchange, and academic collaboration.


The Program

Accomodation & Studio


Urban-Art Studio Space: A modern and well-equipped studio located in the vibrant neighborhood of Melville, offering a serene yet urban atmosphere for artistic expression. Artists will have easy access to Johannesburg's art scene and cultural landmarks.

Access to private rooms that are both comfortable and conducive to artistic pursuits. The privacy and tranquility provided by these rooms allow artists to fully dedicate themselves to their craft and find inspiration in their surroundings.

In addition to private rooms, our residency program also includes studio time sharing options. Artists will have the opportunity to work in a shared studio space, allowing them to interact and collaborate with fellow artists. Alternatively, artists may also have the option to have the studio space completely to themselves, giving them the freedom and privacy necessary to fully explore their artistic vision. Whichever option they choose, our aim is to provide artists with the ideal environment to foster creativity and produce exceptional work.

Mentorship and Critique Sessions


Each artist will be paired with an experienced African contemporary artist as a mentor, providing valuable guidance and feedback throughout their residency. Regular critique sessions with art mentors and curators will help refine artists' creative vision and techniques.

Networking and Collaboration


Artists will have the opportunity to connect with young Johannesburg artists through regular meet-ups, workshops, and collaborative sessions, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and artistic exchange.

This component of the program will encourage collaboration between international artists and African studies students. Artists and students will work together, sharing their creative processes and insights, enriching each other's projects and research.

Our Artist in Residency program will provide a platform for artists to delve deep into African culture, history, and traditions. Likewise, students will benefit from the artists' expertise, gaining valuable insights into the creative process and exploring new avenues in their own research. Safari Experience:


Depending on the length of the residency, artists will have the chance to embark on a curated safari tour, immersing themselves in the stunning African wildlife and landscapes, serving as a wellspring of inspiration for their artworks

These extra packs aim to empower and support artists during their residency, allowing them to focus on their craft and create exceptional artwork inspired by their surroundings.

Exhibition Opportunities


At the end of the residency, artists will have the chance to showcase their works in a solo or group exhibition, giving them exposure to the local and international art community.

Researchers participating in the Afriversity component will have the opportunity to publish their findings and insights from their interdisciplinary collaboration in reputable academic journals or other relevant publications.

Cost:


The program will be payed by the artists during their stay in Melville. and can choose to be sponsored by an institution or country.

Artists from around the world can immerse themselves in our vibrant artistic community while developing their craft. As a resident artist, you will have access to our facilities and the opportunity to collaborate with local artists. 

Participating artists have the flexibility to choose how they finance their residency. While the program is paid for by the artists themselves, they also have the option of seeking sponsorship from an institution or country. This allows artists to focus solely on their work without the financial burden. We believe that by offering this choice,
